Seedling mortality of Alyssum serpyllifolium ssp. lusitanicum and A. murale, both nickel hyperaccumulators, was reduced by increasing concentrations of metal within plant tissues when inoculated with the fungi Pythium mamillatum or P. ultimum, both of which cause damping-off disease of seedlings. Pythium mamillatum, isolated from nickel-rich serpentine soil, was more tolerant of nickel than P. ultimum, isolated from low-metal control soil, and was more pathogenic than P. ultimum towards seedlings containing high concentrations of metal. These results support the hypothesis that metal hyperaccumulation by plants is closely linked to increased protection against disease.

The relative ozone resistance of 20 European and two American populations of Plantago major was examined, and relationships with climatic factors at the source of the plant material were explored using data provided by participants in the ICP-Crops initiative (International Co-operative Programme to Investigate the Effects of Air Pollutants and Other Stresses on Agricultural and Semi-Natural Vegetation). Plants grown from seed were exposed to either charcoal/Purafil® filtered air (CF<5 nmol mol−1 O3) or CF+ozone (70 nmol mol−1 O37 h d−1) over a 2-wk period in controlled environment chambers, and effects on mean plant relative growth rate (R) and allometric root/shoot growth (K) determined. Ozone resistance (R%) was calculated from (R03/RCF)×100.
Populations exhibited contrasting sensitivities to ozone, without the development of typical visible symptoms of injury. A positive relationship was found between relative ozone resistance and descriptors of the ozone-climate at the site of seed collection for the year of, and the 2 yr before, seed collection. The best predictors of inherent ozone resistance were shown to be cumulative ozone exposure indices calculated according to current United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) critical level guidelines for the pollutant (i.e. the accumulated hourly average ozone exposure over a threshold level of 40 nmol mol−1 (AOT40) or 30 nmol mol−1 (AOT30) calculated during daylight hours for the consecutive 3-month period of the year experiencing the highest ozone concentrations). No relationships were found between ozone resistance and climatic factors (temperature, precipitation, sunshine hours, humidity) or the concentrations of other air pollutants (SO2, NO2, NO).
These findings support the view that current ambient levels of ozone in many regions of Europe are high enough to promote evolution of resistance to the pollutant in native plant populations. The significance of these findings to the debate over the establishment of separate critical levels for the protection of natural and semi-natural vegetation is discussed.

Ultrafine copper particles were prepared by the thermal decomposition of a copper formate-poly(2-vinylpyridine) complex. At temperatures above 125°C, a redox reaction occurs where Cu+2 is reduced to copper metal and formate is oxidized to CO2 and H2. The decomposition reaction was studied by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and mass spectrometry. Copper concentrations up to 23 wt% have been incorporated into the polymer by this technique. The presence of the polymeric ligand induces the redox reaction to occur at a temperature 80°C lower than in uncomplexed copper formate. Incorporation of the reducing agent (formate anion) into the polymer precursor enables the redox reaction to occur in the solid state. Films of the polymer precursor were prepared and the formation of metallic copper particles were studied by visible and infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction techniques, and transmission electron microscopy. Results from these measurements indicate that spherical copper particles with an average diameter of 35angstrom are isolated within the polymer matrix. The particles are thermodynamically stable at temperatures up to the decomposition of the polymer matrix (≈350 °C), but oxidize rapidly upon exposure air.

The in situ formation of conductive carbon lines in polymeric substrates was demonstrated by “writing” with CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers. The formation of conductive carbon lines on polymer substrates proceeds through a series of steps including; absorption of light, initiation of decomposition reactions, and thermal propagation of the pyrolysis. The effect of material composition, power density, energy density, and wavelength on the electrical resistance and morphology of the carbon lines was investigated. Above a critical laser energy density (= 400 J/cm2) sufficient light is absorbed by the substrate such that initiation of the pyrolysis reactions occurs. The decomposed polymer strongly absorbs the incident radiation and the thermal propagation of the reactions forms shiny, conductive, carbon lines. The dimensions of these lines are dependent on the energy density impinging on the polymer and are independent of the wavelengths investigated. If too high a power density is employed (∼ 104 Watts/cm2), an ablated track is formed down the center of the carbon line. This results in the relative insensitivity of the linear resistance with increasing power above 104 Watts/cm2.
